…as Carmelite’s Vicar lauds parishioners, priests
The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan last week administered the Sacrament of Confirmation on 206 faithful at the Christ the King Catholic Church (CKC) Kurudu amidst jubilations by parishioners.
Speaking in an interview with the Good Shepherd the Cardinal who has not visited the parish in the past five years, expressed great appreciation with the physical development of the parish which he said epitomizes the spiritual development that gave rise to the confirmation of the 206 catechumen within a short period of time.
“My first assessment of the development in Christ the King Catholic Church (CKC) Kurudu after five years since my last visit is the physical structures. And all I can say is that it is very impressive.”
“Generally, the physical development reflects the extent of the spiritual development and there is no better expression of the spiritual development than the 206 people whom we have confirmed today.”
How much has happened in the hearts and minds of over 40000 of the parishioners, only God can assess,” the Cardinal said.
The Archbishop applauded the commitment of the Carmelites Priests who are the administrators of the parish, noting that they are meeting up with the challenges and expectations imposed by the volume of work in the parish in particular, and the archdiocese in general.
“I can simply say that they are measuring up to the challenges and the expectations of the work in Abuja archdiocese. As you know, this is not the only parish that is growing even in the midst of the recession and the economic challenges. So, I congratulate them for the work they are doing,” he said.
In his comment, Vicar of the Carmelite Order in Nigeria, Very Rev. Fr. Canice-Mary Azuoma, OCD, who graced the occasion, congratulated the parishioners, the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr Francis Odigbo, OCD, and the Associate Priests, Rev. Fr Cyril Udom, OCD and Fr Moses, OCD for their joint efforts in building the parish to an enviable height. “Well, I am so much impressed by what God is doing with the cooperation of the lay faithful and the priests in charge. I see the parish as a fast growing church. A very dynamic one, very progressive one and I am particularly impressed not only by the structural work that is going on but also the spiritual growth which is testified to by the confirmation of the 206 catechumens.
“I am so much impressed by the sense of unity and cooperation that exist between the clergy and the parishioners. I pray that it continues,” the Vicar stated.
It is worthy of note that the Carmelites Priests had within the last few years, built the multimillion Naira church complex through the support of parishioners with a befitting Parish House for the Priests, a Multipurpose Hall and Our Lady of Mount Carmel grotto which has made the parish centre both as a retreat and a conducive place of worship. Kudos also go to the pioneer parish Priest Rev. Fr. Jerome Ituah who built the parish to an enviable height before leaving Nigeria for further studies in Rome.
