Christians have been reminded that ‘’God not only delights in the humble and passionately draws nearer to them, but also gathers them to Himself and blesses them with His wisdom and holiness.’’
Rev. (Deacon) Rodney Tanko who, by the grace of God was to be elevated to the Catholic priesthood with 14 others yesterday, Saturday January 4, 2017 at Our Lady Queen of Nigeria Pro- Cathedral Church Garki Auja, said this recently in a homily at St. Mary’s Karu, Abuja.
Reflecting from the book of Zephanaih, Rev. Tanko said God’s promise to the remnants of Israel is not just for everybody but for a group made up of humble and lowly people that put their entire confidence only in God.
He said the Lord’s concern in the message of Zephaniah is for all Christians to be part of this chosen group through integrity, honesty and above all, humility and obedience to God.
Rev. Tanko regretted that at times people tend to resist this gracious rest to which God has invited them because they often think they can get it only with money, fame or power.
“Let us not deceive ourselves, but continue to follow the permanent and saving values that radiates from the person and life of Jesus Christ,” he said.
He likened Zephaniah’s position to Apostle Paul’s reminder to God’s people that God delights in humble hearts, the lowly and the poor in spirit.
On Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount (the Beatitudes) he explained, “The most important Christian virtues that will help us become part of God promise lie in our meditation on the words of Christ.”
In the message; those who are closer to God are; the poor in spirit; those who mourn; the hungry and thirsty for justice; those who work for peace; the merciful and the pure in heart; the insulted and persecuted in the course of doing the right things etc.
“These are the living blessedness that we see in the Saints of all times and ages,” the Reverend concluded.
